Analyze both the environmental impacts and benefits of rooftop and community gardens
for three cities with different climates, cultures, and urban form

Toledo, Barcelona, Salt Lake City

Intellectual Merit:
1. Analyze rooftop and community gardens in a cross-city context
2. Coupled modeling of life cycle analysis (LCA) and ecosystem service evaluation
3. Model gardens at multiple scales: individual and city wide implementation

Global Engagement:
1. Students will be housed in the ICTA building at UAB that houses a rooftop greenhouse
2. Two semesters of weekly video conference meetings prior to student travel
3. Students will receive entrepreneurship training
