We are looking for undergraduate and MS students to join our international and interdisciplinary research project! Application deadline is October 23, 2017 by midnight.

This opportunity includes a mandatory training in Spring 2018 and travel and research in Barcelona in Summer 2018. Students considering applying are encouraged to read this document that will help them understand the research questions and the international collaboration of this project.

Summer 2017

Students traveled to UAB to continue their research and work with our international collaborators. They worked in Barcelona full time for about 8 weeks. The costs of food, lodging, transportation expenses, and a stipend were covered under the grant. Along with the great research which is described under research areas, check the blog to see the fun adventures student enjoyed!

Spring 2017 Meeting Schedule

All participating students will spend up to 10 hrs per week on their research projects. Students will be paid on an hourly basis. Students will also attend online group meetings. Each group meeting will be for 1 hr. A tentative schedule is provided below. All the meetings will be held on Fridays from noon to 1 p.m.

January 13
Welcome students to the program. Discussion topics are: Program goals and requirements emphasizing participatory engagement and responsibility and general expected behavior. IRES community members introduce themselves.
January 20
Pre departure training. Each student begins their research and continue to meet weekly with their UT or UU mentor throughout the semester.
January 27
UAB introduces ongoing research and facilities in ICTA and Inedit company. Starting in year 2, this meeting will be replaced with the prior cohort sharing their experiences.

Urban agriculture presentation from UT and UU students

Students work together to make a plan for how to improve the website. They might modify the website during this meeting
April 21
IRES student meeting only (no faculty allowed) where students discuss and reflect on first semester experience. They provide suggestions for next semester. They discuss their progress thus far on website development.
April 28
IRES students present their preliminary results and a detailed plan for what they will be doing in Barcelona. They will receive feedback from IRES community. Each student also submits a short technical report on their work.

Orientation: Students receive training on Spanish culture, etiquette, and language

Students discuss Good practices for collaboration including ethics in research (they can write up a collaboration plan)
